John B. Boles
(B.A., Rice, 1965; Ph.D., Virginia, 1969),
is the William Pettus Hobby Professor of History at Rice and the
Manging Editor of the Journal of Southern History.

He is the author of six other books, editor or coeditor of five more.

In 1991 he received the Meritorious Service Award
from the Association of Rice Alumni, and in 1994,
the Graduate Student Association Teaching Award.

First Published in 1992; revised and updated
edition published in 1997
